How TO MAKE Avocado Toast
Use a sharp knife to cut around the pit of your avocados. Tap the pit with your knife, don’t stab at it, and twist to remove. If you’re doing anything decorative with the avocado peel the skin off carefully.
Slice the avocado and gently mash it onto your toast. You can add salt, pepper, sesame seeds, chili oil, or any other desired seasonings at this point.
Top your avocado made with nice fresh flavors. I love a smattering of summer fresh cherry tomatoes, a bit of basil and sprinkling of sea salt.
You can add some fruit into the mix with fresh strawberry slices drizzled with an aged balsamic.
An avocado rose is a most dramatic topping, but actually quite easy. Thinly slice your peeled avocado half. The direction of your cuts doesn’t matter. It’s easiest to form into a rose if you cut short slices horizontally but in this example I cut long vertical slices and the result was still easily attained.
Transfer your “rose” to the toast using a spatula or knife then carefully spread the petals out with your fingers. For extra flavor you can add some salt or pepper but do so JUST before serving as the salt will melt and discolor the avocado.
PRO TIPS FOR THis RECIPE
Choose ripe avocados! Hard or overripe avocados will not make for a great snack. I’ve got my Avocado choosing tips below. Breads I love for this are whole grain, potato, rye, brioche, and any brown bread. Make your toast just before serving for best results. The taste will remain unchanged for a while but they do brown pretty quickly. Go for big, fresh flavors you love, avocado is a great supporting ingredient with a creamy mouthfeel but it’s pretty mild.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do you choose a ripe avocado?
Gently press on it and the avocado should yield slightly. Generally speaking a rip avocado will have darker skin and when you lift the stem off the top you’ll see a tan color instead of green. If the avocado feels pretty soft then it’s over-ripe. Too hard and you’ll be waiting a few days.
How can you ripen an avocado?
Storing avocados in a closed paper bag will speed the ripening process slightly. Adding an apple or banana, which release ethelyne gas will speed the ripening process up a bit more.
How do you keep an avocado from browning?
Contact with oxygen in the air causes the avocado to oxidize and turn brown. The best way to keep an avocado from browning is to eat it soon after cutting. Wrapping tightly in plastic, or lightly coating with lemon juice will help a bit as well. More ripe avocados will tend to brown faster.
