Ingredients Needed

For the Onion Gravy

Butter: You need quite a bit of butter here to sauté all the onions! We’re basically caramelizing the onions for a deep onion flavor. Onions: Slice some white onions nice and thin into half moons. Flour: Flour is added to thicken the sauce! Cook it with the onions and butter before adding the liquids. Red Wine: Red wine adds a depth of flavor to the sauce. The alcohol will get cooked off! However, if you prefer not to cook with alcohol, replace the amount of liquid with more beef broth. Beef Broth: Beef broth is necessary to create a super flavorful gravy! Opt for a good quality beef broth. Worcestershire Sauce: This will add a nice umami flavor. Thyme: I used fresh thyme but you can also use dried! If using dried, add about 1/4 tsp to start then add more to taste if necessary. Sage: I also added fresh sage here to add an extra hint of herby goodness! Sugar: Adds a hint of sweetness and balances out the flavors in the gravy.

For the Bangers

Pork Sausages: You can find Irish-style bangers at the store which are essentially just pork sausages. Or, use your favorite brand of pork sausages! Olive Oil: A little bit of olive oil will help to sauté the sausages. Mashed Potatoes & Peas: Serve your bangers with a side of mashed potatoes and peas for a full Irish meal!

Tips for Success

Use sausages of your choice! If you prefer, you can use chicken or even plant-based sausages here. If the sausages get cold while making the gravy, add the sausages back into the onion gravy while it is simmering to heat them up again before serving! You can serve your bangers and mash with colcannon potatoes for an extra special Irish twist!
