Breakfast, the most important meal of the day happens to be my most difficult meal as well. I am stuck between eating loads of carbohydrates or sugar and struggling to find the right balance. Kanji / Porridge is something we all grew up having as a late-morning meal. Right from when the kids start on solids to aged people, porridge works for everyone. Porridge can be made with rice, wheat, millet, and other grains. This Godhumai Rava Kanji or Broken Wheat Porridge is one such recipe. I have made this lapsi kanji a savory version as there are certain days when I need a break from eating a sugary breakfast. My grandmother would have spiced buttermilk as a late-morning drink on summer days. Buttermilk is a very nutritious ingredient that is great for gut health and digestion. Cold buttermilk with spices on a summer morning is one refreshing drink that no one could resist. Check this recipe if you want to make a spiced buttermilk recipe. I have one other version of the spiced buttermilk that is more of a South Indian recipe. One similar recipe that I have made with steel-cut oats works as a great lunch for me when I am cooking for just one. Check this Thayir Oats | Oats Bagalabhath | Spicy Yogurt Oats, if you are looking for a lunch option. Broken wheat also known as godhumai rava in Tamil and dalia in Hindi is a coarsely ground whole wheat. I love the nutty flavor of broken wheat and use it for many recipes.
Few of my recipes made with Broken Wheat -
Broken Wheat Payasam / Godhumai Rava Kheer
Godhumai rava pidi kozhukattai
Oatmeal and Broken wheat idli
Godhumai rava upma
Lapsi / Broken wheat dessert
This Godhumai rava kanji is an inspiration from the buttermilk recipe in which I have used wheat as a fiber and carbohydrate component to keep us filled up through the morning. I have made it in a drinkable consistency, but if you prefer to eat it out of a bowl, make it a little thicker. I would also suggest topping it with a little chopped onion if you are eating it out of a bowl. Preparation time - 10 minutesCooking time - 15 minutesDifficulty level - Easy
Ingredients to make Godhumai Rava Kanji - Serves 2
Broken Wheat / Godhumai Rava - ¼ cup ( I used finely ground broken wheat) Yogurt - ½ cup (mix it with ½ cup of water) Mint leaves - 7 or 8 Cilantro - 3 sprigs Green chilies - 1 Ginger - ½ inch piece Cumin powder - ¼ tsp Salt - to taste
Procedure to make Broken Wheat Porridge
Wash the broken wheat under running water and then add about a cup of water and cook it until soft. I cooked it in my instant pot in pressure cook mode for 6 minutes.
Let the cooked broken wheat cool down to room temperature.
In the meantime, grind mint, cilantro, green chili, and ginger into a smooth paste adding little water.
Whisk the yogurt well and add about ½ cup of water to it. Add the ground mixture to the yogurt and mix well.
Also, add the salt needed and ground cumin to the yogurt mixture.
Once the broken wheat has cooled to room temperature, add it to the yogurt mixture and mix well.
Adjust the consistency to your preference and serve.
I make the dalia kanji the night before and love to drink it chilled on a hot summer day.
