Oatmeal Apple Crisp

Nothing says Fall more than a big bowl of warm apple crisp straight from the oven. To me it is the quintessential Fall dessert. It’s the perfect recipe to use up all of those seasonal apples. Bonus: It will make your house smell amazing while it cooks! My favorite desserts are always served warm with ice cream. There is something about a warm gooey dessert with cold melty ice cream! You can even get extra fancy and serve this oatmeal apple crisp with homemade salted caramel sauce drizzled on top!

The difference between a cobbler and a crisp

Although this apple crisp is similar to a cobbler and apple pie in the filling the topping is completely different. A cobbler uses a cake batter and then places the cinnamon sugar apples on top. Where as a pie uses either a top or bottom crust or both! This apple crisp features the same apple filing however uses a crisp oat topping instead. I find crisps to be the easiest dessert of the three. It super versatile and can be used with any other fruit!

What’s in an Apple Crisp?

This easy apple crisp recipe is twofold — the crisp streusel topping and the rich apple filling. For the crunchy topping, you’ll need light brown sugar, all-purpose flour, old-fashioned oats, and cold unsalted butter. For the apple pie-style filling, you’ll need 5 cups of cubed apples (about 5 average-sized apples), fresh lemon juice, cinnamon, and light brown sugar. You can use whichever apples you prefer or that are in season, but I recommend Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Gala. You want ones that won’t turn to mush in the baking process.

How To Make Oatmeal Apple Crisp

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees, and grease a 9 x 9 pan with nonstick cooking spray or butter. Make the Crisp Topping: Add brown sugar, flour, oats, and butter to a food processor fitted with the blade attachment. Pulse for 30 seconds or until the mixture is combined and resembles small pea size crumbs.
